Faster. Puffin-er. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%@@@@@@@@@@@@ A native web browser for Classic Mac OS @@%%%%%%%%%%%@@@@@@@ Real HTTPS, a modern JavaScript engine. No proxy, no second machine. Thank you for downloading MacSurf. This note has everything you need to get started, and one small favor to ask at the end of the first section. ------------------------------------------------- PLEASE SUPPORT MACSURF ------------------------------------------------- MacSurf is a full-time project. Bringing the modern, HTTPS web back to real Mac OS 9 hardware is a great deal of work, and it only continues at this pace if it can pay its own way. If MacSurf put your old Mac back on the web, please consider chipping in. Every bit genuinely helps - and if I never ask, I can't expect any, so here I am, asking. Thank you - truly.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thank you for your support and contributions to MacSurf on Patreon & Ko-Fi~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Shlooom ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Kilgeist ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Turuun ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rogue ~~~~~~~~~~~~****************************************************************************Special thanks to @glossolallia, @CaptainPanic29, and @Azryael on GitHub and @SandwichEnthusiast7 on Reddit for their detailed bug reports, crash logs, and hardware verification work on G3 and G4 systems that made isolating the blank-screen bug possible. Hopefully this version works better for all! ------------------------------------------------- WHAT'S NEW IN 2.0 -------------------------------------------------THE BLANK PAGE IS FIXED - FOR GOOD.If MacSurf ever opened to a blank window on a maxed-outMac - and clearing the cache only fixed it for a whilebefore it came back - 2.0 repairs that automatically thefirst time you launch it. No cache-clearing needed. There were two real causes. MacSurf checked whether apointer was "valid" against fixed address ceilings thatwere simply wrong on higher-RAM Macs, where the program'smemory maps higher up - so it rejected perfectly goodpointers, string matching broke, and no page everfetched. It now reads the real memory bounds from thesystem at launch. Separately, the "dead host" list thatkeeps an unreachable server from stalling a page wasbeing saved to disk with no expiry, so one bad networkmoment could condemn your home page forever; that list isnow session-only, and 2.0 deletes any poisoned list anolder version left behind.(About the Virtual Memory workaround: toggling VM neveractually did anything - we measured it, on and off lookedidentical. If it seemed to help, that was the restart.)MORE OF THE WEB, OVER HTTPS.MacSurf's TLS stack was strict about certificate order, and many servers - macintoshgarden.org among them - sendtheir certificates out of order. MacSurf now sorts themout, so a whole family of sites that used to fall back toplain http open securely on the Mac.FASTER.Off-screen images now wait until you scroll to them, forevery image on the page. A busy forum thread with a bigattachment went from 20 seconds-to-two-minutes down to afew seconds. And typing in text fields is snappy again -each letter paints the instant you press it.NICER TO USE.The address bar now finishes URLs from your history asyou type, with a dropdown of the other matches. There isa real History manager (History > Show All History,Cmd-H) and a folder-based Bookmark manager (Bookmarks >Manage Bookmarks, Cmd-B) with drag-and-drop. Plus arefreshed toolbar, a new About box, and a Clear Cachemenu item.Get Info now shows the version, and the About box,User-Agent, and navigator.userAgent all reportMacSurf/2.0.If a blank page still happens on 2.0, please tell us onGitHub issue #207 and attach MacSurf Debug.log. Thatwould mean a cause we haven't seen yet. ------------------------------------------------- TO RUN ------------------------------------------------- Expand this archive with StuffIt Expander and double- click MacSurf. No installer, no configuration. Requirements: Power Macintosh (G3 or G4) Mac OS 9.1 - 9.2.2, CarbonLib 1.5+ ~64 MB RAM (more helps on heavy pages) ------------------------------------------------- A FEW THINGS TO KNOW ------------------------------------------------- * Very heavy sites (such as GitHub) don't render yet. To download new MacSurf releases from a Mac OS machine, use the plain non-SSL (http) version of macsurf.org - no other computer needed. * Tab reaches form fields, but not links or buttons yet. * Tabs (several pages in one window) are not enabled yet. ------------------------------------------------- THANK YOU, 68kmla.org ------------------------------------------------- 68kmla.org - the 68k / PowerPC Mac community - has been so kind and welcoming, tested MacSurf every single day, and shaped this whole stretch of work. Getting your forums to render, log in, and post a reply from a real Mac OS 9 machine has been one of the most rewarding things to build toward. Thank you. ============================================= Web . . . . https://macsurf.org ( a non-SSL http version is available for downloading from Mac OS machines ) Source . . . https://github.com/mplsllc/macsurf Engine . . . https://github.com/mplsllc/macQJS Made with care for old Macs.
