Default user avatar is not displayed in emails

Steps to reproduce

1. Subscribe to a question thread.
2. As another user with no avatar set, post a reply.
3. See the email notification.

Expected behavior
The user avatar is displayed, just like on the website.

Actual behavior
A broken image icon is displayed instead of the avatar.
