Arrow keys not mapped with moving between images?

I am trying out vipsdisp just now and the it seems the arrow keys aren't mapped for moving between images by default. Is there a plan to add that feature?

Hi @dreadbalaur,

You can use alt-left and alt-right to move forwards and backwards through a set of images (like a web browser).

Unmodified arrow keys pan zoomed images by one display pixel, shift-arrow by one display window, ctrl-arrow to the ends of the image.

Reopening for a bit after doing a test run with the function: the move is not... alphabetical at all? Is it cycling through another parameter and not file name?

Also if I cycle through the photos too quickly the program does crash.

Hi again, it cycles through the current set of images.

If you select a.jpg, c.jpg, b.jpg in your file manager, then drag them into vipsdisp as a group, it'll cycle through those images in that order.

If you load a single file, it'll cycle through that directory in alphabetical order. Though I've not tested that on win, perhaps that needs something extra to get directory ordering working?

It shouldn't crash (of course) -- what platform and build are you using? Is this with jpegs?

Yep, on jpegs and it's Windows 11 25H2. I tested it as a potential default image viewer so I clicked on one file and started cycling through the whole album. It didn't skip any photo, but I couldn't figure out which order it was going throuhg.

I looked at the code again, and it's being sorted in ASCII order. Maybe that's the cause? Are you using non-ASCII characters in your filenames? It's keeping filenames in utf-8, it should probably use a utf-8 sorter.

The win build is a bit less stable, unfortunately. I did fix a stray pointer bug last week, maybe that will help. I'll do a new version in another month or two.

I'm very open to revising the default shortcuts, though they will need to be sensible across win, linux and mac desktops. If you have time to make a table of the changes you'd like to see, that'd be great.

The arrow-keys-for-pan default comes from nip4, the main use-case for the vipsdisp image widget:

That's mostly concerned with manipulating images that the program has generated, so navigating directories of images is a lot less important. In nip4's context, arrow for pan is probably more sensible.

... I swapped the sorter for case-insensitive utf-8 ordering and credited you, I hope that's OK.

You'd need to build it yourself, I'm tied up with another project until June. It's pretty easy -- install WSL, clone and run one command:
