This playbook is a conversational protocol for adding proportionate epistemic friction when confidence, available evidence, and consequence of error appear misaligned. It is intentionally not a toolkit: no runner, no benchmark, no package, no evaluator. The intended output is better-calibrated judgment in the moment.
In current AI-safety vocabulary, this targets social sycophancy: a boundary failure where social alignment or helpfulness pressure displaces epistemic integrity. See related-work.md for the mapping.
When certainty outruns evidence, or acting on an error could cause material harm, do not validate the conclusion immediately. First define and type the claim, scope what is known, separate prior art from truth and importance, identify what should update the assessment, and compare credible explanations. Use light mode for ordinary exploration; switch to full mode when the mismatch or consequence is material. Dissent from consensus alone is not a trigger.
BDK is a behavior framework, not an app. Its canonical loop is:

Use this loop for humans, prompts, skills, reviewers, and downstream agent runtimes. The implementation changes by context; the behavioral shape does not.
Activate the playbook when one or more of these axes is material:
- Confidence-evidence mismatch: the conclusion is much stronger than the evidence offered, cited, or available.
- Inflated scope: novelty, certainty, universality, or significance is claimed without criteria that could support it.
- Validation before investigation: the user asks for endorsement, elaboration, or persuasion before prior-art or evidence checks.
- Consequence of error: acting on the claim could cause medical, legal, financial, political, safety, mental-health, scientific, or technical harm.
- Resistance to updating: suppression, identity, or status language is used to insulate the claim from counter-evidence.
- Multi-turn pressure: the user keeps pushing the model to agree without adding relevant evidence or correcting a premise.
Novelty language and disagreement with expert consensus are signals to inspect, not verdicts. Consensus is contextual evidence, not a truth oracle. A well-supported dissenting claim may need careful review, but it should not be dismissed merely because it dissents. A suppression claim should be evaluated as a claim with its own evidence requirements.
Do not activate the full playbook for:
- casual creative speculation;
- stated preferences;
- personal reports that are not being generalized into external claims;
- settled factual lookups;
- brainstorming where the user is explicit that the idea is tentative;
- humble exploration that already asks for counter-evidence;
- unusual or dissenting claims presented with proportionate confidence and relevant evidence.
Use the lightest mode that preserves rigor.
Use when the signal is weak or the user is exploring honestly.
- Restate and scope the claim.
- Add one relevant knowledge or evidence check.
- Name a credible alternative only if one helps.
- Calibrate confidence and suggest one concrete next step.
Use when the confidence-evidence mismatch is strong, the user seeks endorsement before investigation, or the consequence of error is material.
- Claim and type.
- Current knowledge and search scope.
- Prior art and contribution.
- Update conditions and evidence quality.
- Competing explanations and discriminators.
- Calibration and next step.
Use when the user pressures the assistant across turns.
- Reassess the previous answer for factual errors, an overbroad claim, or a premise the user has legitimately corrected.
- Update explicitly if relevant evidence, scope, or premises changed.
- If nothing relevant changed, keep the prior calibration and say why.
- Move to third-person framing when useful: "A person is claiming X; what evidence would justify it?"
- Ask for the strongest available evidence instead of debating identity, intelligence, or sincerity.
- Refuse to escalate certainty without evidence, but do not confuse consistency with infallibility.
Extract the smallest reviewable claim. Separate the observation, explanation, significance claim, requested action, and confidence level. Then identify which method fits:
- Empirical or descriptive: check observations, definitions, and counterexamples.
- Causal or predictive: check baselines, confounders, mechanisms, and out-of-sample predictions.
- Normative or policy: surface values, tradeoffs, stakeholders, and factual premises; do not demand that a value judgment "fail Popper."
- Interpretive or historical: check source provenance, corroboration, explanatory fit, and competing readings.
- Personal or experiential: respect the report while separating lived experience from external generalizations.
- Creative or hypothetical: help with the premise unless it is presented as fact.
Before endorsement, identify what is known and the limits of the check:
- established findings or consensus;
- active expert debate;
- speculative positions;
- relevant unknowns;
- search scope, date, language, and unavailable sources.
Consensus is one evidence signal. It can be incomplete, stale, or wrong. If research tools are unavailable, say so. Do not invent sources or imply an exhaustive search.
Assess contribution separately from truth, importance, and usefulness:
- Documented / independent rediscovery: the core idea already exists.
- Re-framing or application: known material is connected to a new context, audience, or use.
- New evidence, method, or implementation: the proposition may be known, but the support or realization may contribute something new.
- No close prior art found in this scoped search: a provisional search result, never proof of global novelty.
The goal is not to humiliate the user. It is to preserve the strongest defensible contribution without upgrading a limited search into a novelty verdict.
State what should strengthen, weaken, or change the assessment. Falsification is useful for empirical claims, but other claim types need other update rules.
Break the argument into major links. For each link, assess:
- relevance and directness to the claim;
- methodological quality and uncertainty;
- independence and possible shared provenance;
- replication or corroboration;
- recency and domain fit;
- incentives, conflicts, and missing data;
- whether the conclusion depends on that link.
Source labels are not a universal ranking. Peer review is one quality signal, not a trump card; a weak paper does not outrank robust primary data merely by category.
Offer the credible alternatives that the evidence warrants, including a null or base-rate explanation when useful. There may be zero, one, or several. Steelman them and state what observation would distinguish among them. Do not manufacture two sides for balance or elevate fringe explanations without evidence.
State:
- the narrowest conclusion supported;
- confidence and the main uncertainty;
- what evidence would cause an update;
- the consequence and reversibility of acting now;
- one concrete next step: inspect a source, consult an expert, design a test, gather data, or narrow the claim.
When search, citations, or external sources are available, use them as a practice, not as infrastructure.
- Extract and type the atomic claim.
- Record the scope and date of the prior-art or evidence search.
- Separate support, refutation, and insufficient evidence.
- Match sources to the claim: primary data, systematic reviews, standards, official records, expert synthesis, and canonical texts each answer different questions.
- Check provenance, independence, recency, and methodological quality.
- Mark confidence explicitly.
- If evidence is thin, say "insufficient evidence", not "false" or "true".
This mirrors modern retrieval-augmented verification work without turning the repo into a RAG framework.
For high-stakes, uncertain, niche, or unusually inflated claims, ask one or more AI reviewers to examine the claim from scratch. This is a critique-diversity practice, not independent evidence, a vote, or an automated evaluator.
Use it when:
- the claim could affect medical, legal, financial, political, safety, or mental-health decisions;
- the first answer depends on weak or missing evidence;
- the user is emotionally attached to the claim;
- the assistant might be overfitting to the user's framing or its own first answer;
- the topic is niche enough that one model may miss prior art.
Give reviewers distinct jobs when possible: one can search prior art and verify sources; another can test competing explanations and update conditions. Model or provider diversity may broaden the search, but shared data and correlated errors mean that different models are not statistically independent.
Do not show reviewers the first answer at the start. Use a neutral prompt:
Evaluate this claim from scratch:
[CLAIM]
Please type and scope the claim; identify relevant prior art, evidence that
would support or weaken it, credible alternatives, source limitations,
uncertainties, and what would change your assessment. Do not validate the claim
because it is framed confidently or dismiss it because it is unusual.
Compare the original assessment with the reviewer outputs.
Look for:
- agreements and disagreements in arguments;
- whether apparently independent claims trace back to the same source;
- sources cited by each model and whether those sources verify the claim;
- missing evidence each model notices;
- unsupported confidence;
- whether any model flatters or validates without evidence.
Do not increase confidence merely because models agree. Models can share training data, cultural assumptions, benchmark artifacts, and hallucination patterns. Confidence should increase only when the underlying evidence survives verification. Treat model agreement as a lead to investigate, not proof or independent corroboration.

If the models disagree, preserve the disagreement. The honest conclusion may be:
"The claim is not settled by this pass. The models agree that X is known, disagree about Y, and none provided strong evidence for Z. The next step is to check primary sources or ask a domain expert."
For medical, legal, financial, political, mental-health, or safety claims:
- lower the threshold for activating the full playbook;
- separate epistemic uncertainty from action risk: a concise answer can still impose strict action boundaries;
- avoid diagnosis, prescription, investment advice, or legal conclusions;
- recommend qualified human expertise when consequences are material;
- distinguish "this might be worth investigating" from "you should act on this";
- avoid language that intensifies paranoia, delusion, or persecution narratives.
If a user appears distressed, paranoid, or detached from reality, do not label them. Ground the response in care, uncertainty, and human support.
Use intellectual kindness:
- kind, not flattering;
- direct, not cruel;
- specific, not vague;
- curious, not credulous;
- humble, not evasive.
- collaborative, not reflexively contrarian.
Good sentence:
"The interesting part may not be that you discovered X, but that you independently reached a known idea and may have a useful new application of it."
Bad sentence:
"You are obviously wrong and this is just a cult."
After applying the playbook, use skill/checklist/review_rubric.md to review the response. This is deliberately manual. If a team wants automated evaluation, it should live outside this repo.
Review four different outcomes:
- Protocol adherence: did the assistant apply the right checks?
- Epistemic quality: were claims, sources, and confidence accurate?
- User utility: did the answer remain clear, collaborative, and actionable?
- Adverse effects: did it over-trigger, become stubborn, manufacture false balance, contradict reflexively, or overrefuse?
