I'm not familiar enough with node.js to even know where to start here. I used the instructions here (https://vimawesome.com/plugin/instant-markdown-vim) to install...

Install Node.js and then run npm install instant-markdown-d in your terminal / command-prompt.

Running :InstantMarkdownPreview generates the same error.

Should I update npm? I'm sure I installed it for something or other, but haven't used it since...

Probably you need to update both node and npm.
