Trash Bin Optimizer

One-Sentence Description

A data-driven tool that identifies optimal locations for new trash bins in NYC by analyzing pedestrian traffic and existing bin coverage.

About You

I’m a student at the Bronx High School of Science in New York City with a strong interest in biology, technology, and solving real-world problems through data. I got into coding by exploring how computational tools can be applied to practical issues, especially in urban systems and public health.

About Your App

This app analyzes publicly available NYC data on pedestrian traffic and existing litter basket locations to recommend where additional trash bins should be placed for maximum impact. It is designed for city planners, local governments, and communities aiming to reduce litter and improve cleanliness in high-traffic areas. The tool uses Python with libraries such as pandas, geopandas, and scipy for data processing and spatial analysis, and Streamlit and Folium for building an interactive map-based interface. By combining real-world data with simple optimization logic, the app provides actionable insights for improving urban infrastructure.
