Address vs Places

What is the difference between "Addresses" and "Places"?

• An "Address" can be added in Gramps desktop an is then visible as Metadata in Grampsweb (after sync)

• An "Address" has dedicated fields for Street/Nr/ZIP, but no geolocation

• "Address" cannot be edited yet Allow editing addresses #36

• I believe an "Address" is not visible in "Map"

• A "Place" may have geolocation and is visible in "Map"

• No Street/No/ZIP can be added in a structured way to a "Place"

• A "Place" may be hierarchical

Shouldn't those two entities be the same? What is the recommended approach to combine both types? How would you add a street name/number in "Place"

Good question.

One of the reasons why #36 is still open is because I personally never use addresses.

I'm not a Gramps developer long enough to know all the history, but I think addresses have been around before places existed. See e.g. https://www.gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php/GEPS_006:_Better_Place_handling.

How would you add a street name/number in "Place"

What I do in practice is to create a place Hierarchy: City > Street > Building. There is even a place type "Number" for this purpose (I usually use "Building" and put the street name + number as place title).

Going down to the street number looks awkward

Using your approach to use "Building" + Street + Number still misses the City at a first glance when having the person open.

For my use case I guess I will add the city name to the "Building" name, in addition to street and number.

Yes, I think that's a good approach.

Actually - something I also do for residence events is to add a description. You can add the full address, plus any additional information (3rd floor, etc.) to the residence event description, and it will be displayed in this view as well.
