Taycan often reports "Charging system error"

Describe the bug

Very often a Porsche Taycan reports a Charging System Failure. I believe this may be because the charger (a Porsche Mobile Charger Connect) fails to start charging within the first few minutes of connecting.

I suspect the "welcomecharge" setting would help, but the ISO15118 template doesn't show the welcomecharge setting. As a setting it also doesn't appear to be documented - I believe it goes on either the vehicle or the charger, maybe both need to support it but am not 100% sure.

Steps to reproduce

1. Configure a Porsche Taycan as an ISO15118 vehicle using the UI configuration option.
2. Configure a Porsche Mobile Charger Connect using the UI configuration option.
3. Plug the car in. Intermittantly witness the Charging System Error. It seems more likely when the PMCC is "asleep".

Configuration details

Using evcc dump --cfg is only outputting:

Log details

n/a as the error is on the car. If required I can try and get the logs (I assume the eebus ones) when it occurs next?

What type of operating system or environment does evcc run on?

@andig I notice from other issues / commits and the Taycan forum that you implemented most of the eebus stuff, and I believe using a Taycan/PMCC yourself. Do you have any issues such as this?

I do not have such issues, and the car doesn't have such problems with the wallbox. Welcome charge is also not needed. Which model year is the Taycan and which OBC (11kW/22kW)? Is the PMCC display showing the error right when connecting? This hints that the issue can not be related to evcc but is related to the OBC and the PMCC itself. Can you provide an image of that error? Is the same happening when evcc is not connected to the PMCC?

I just thought that I’d share - doing the 2 finger salute in the top right of the screen to reboot the PCM/car electrics seems to fix the connectivity issues between car and charger for about a week. So I’m pretty convinced it’s a Taycan issue not a charger or EVCC, although the impact on EVCC is considerable.

Just a curios question.. do you have vDSL at home?

This crashes all my PLC connections at home. Because it operates in the same band.

Unsure if the charger <-> car connection PLC is isolated from the rest PLC.

Where my car reliable fails is:

• car under 25% SoC
• UI all set to optimize charge
• evcc wants to start charging in 6 hours

This will result in:

• car does not go in sleep mode (-> discharge of battery and 12V battery, happened to me once)
• general discharge of SoC until car starts charging
• car does not properly start charging through evcc. (Especially, when the first charge block of evcc does not get the car over 25%)

@DerAndereAndi did you experience similar behavior?
What is your magic evcc setting to compensate this? :)

My car also does not reliably get detected via PLC MAC.
I use dynamic tariffs, that is why my first charge window can be quite late after plugging in the car.

I have finally found that a complete reset of the car's Plug and Charge configuration AND factory resetting the PMCC resolved the issue. I had done both previously and it didn't fix anything. But doing both at the same time (i.e. resetting them both before connecting them again) seems to have solved it.

Uninstalling the Taycan's plug and charge certificate can be done in the App.
Factory resetting the EVSE can be done from the touch screen, and probably the web interface too.

Direct answer to your question, we have a FTTP connection.

So it did for a time. But then reverted to the old problems. What did solve it was turning off the PLC communication in the PMCC web interface. It can no longer do the auth or pass charging info back, but it has been 100% reliable.

... that is until today. Completely broken, but tried another car and the PMCC is fine, then tried another charger and it looks like my Taycan's AC charging is done for. Calling the local Porsche Centre tomorrow, hoping for a new 11kw charger instead of the buggy 22!

Thanks for your reply. I can confirm that other electric vehicles are working fine. At any rate, it now seems clear that the 22-kW charger—or its software—is the problem. If only we could remotely restart the PMCC.
I'm curious to see what your PZ says; I don't have much hope for mine. They're all just petrolheads.

O make it reliable log in to the PMCC as the ‘Customer Service’ user. Turn off PLC Connection to Vehicle. Then reconfigure EVCC to use HA integration for the state of charge, etc and use the HA Porsche Integration to get the data from the car via the web. It’s not as real-time, but it does work. If I end up with a swapped 22kw charger I’ll let you know if that makes everything work properly. From what I’ve read it’s a firmware bug with no fix.

@Neverminda So my 22kW charger is broken (not related to this, just wont charge). Being replaced with 11kW + compensation. Will report back if the 11kW works with the PMCC / EVCC reliably, my reading of forums suggests that will work great. The only snag, the part is on back order due to the number of 22kW chargers needing replacement due to failure right now!

I would encourage you to also write Porsche regarding the EU Cloud Data Act.

The solution via the inofficial web-API is only feasible if you still have a Connection service. Knowing what the state of charge of your car is, should not be priced as 360€ per year...

The EU Cloud Data Act could help resolve this once and for all.. If they would not just send us zip files once a week...
