3. Updated Template Manager (template-manager.ts)

Changes:

  1. Added imports for template creation functions
  2. Updated loadTemplate() method:
    • Removed TODO comment
    • Added switch statement to route to appropriate template
    • Checks localStorage first for custom templates
    • Falls back to built-in templates
    • Returns blank document for unknown IDs with console warning
  3. Fixed createBlankDocument() to include assets: {} property
  4. Removed invalid provenance property from Document structure

New Code:

static async loadTemplate(templateId: string): Promise<Document> {
  // Check localStorage first for custom templates
  const cached = this.loadTemplateFromLocalStorage(templateId)
  if (cached) {
    return cached
  }

  // Load built-in templates
  switch (templateId) {
    case 'blank':
      return this.createBlankDocument()
    case 'shadcn':
      return createShadcnTemplate()
    case 'lunaris':
      return createLunarisTemplate()
    case 'halo':
      return createHaloTemplate()
    case 'nitro':
      return createNitroTemplate()
    default:
      console.warn(`Unknown template ID: ${templateId}, returning blank document`)
      return this.createBlankDocument()
  }
}

4. Documentation

Created comprehensive README.md in src/lib/templates/content/ covering:

  • Overview of each template
  • Template structure and schema
  • Token system (color, typography, spacing)
  • Token references vs literal values
  • Best practices for creating templates
  • Usage examples
  • Future enhancements roadmap

Technical Details

Document Schema Compliance

All templates follow the Document schema from src/lib/schema.ts:

  • Normalized structure with separate records for pages, frames, layers, tokens
  • Stable, unique IDs using timestamp-based generation
  • Token binding via { tokenRef: { tokenId } }
  • Proper provenance tracking on all entities (pages, frames, layers)

Token System

Three types of tokens are supported:

  1. Color Tokens

    {
      id: TokenId,
      kind: 'color',
      name: string,
      value: { format: 'hex', hex: string },
      meta?: { description: string }
    }
  2. Typography Tokens

    {
      id: TokenId,
      kind: 'typography',
      name: string,
      value: {
        fontFamily: string,
        fontWeight: number,
        fontSize: number,
        lineHeight: number,
        letterSpacing?: number
      }
    }
  3. Spacing Tokens

    {
      id: TokenId,
      kind: 'spacing',
      name: string,
      value: { px: number }
    }

Token References

Layers can reference tokens for dynamic theming:

// Using token reference (preferred)
color: { tokenRef: { tokenId: primaryTokenId } }

// Using literal value
color: { literal: { format: 'hex', hex: '#000000' } }

Testing

TypeScript Validation

  • All template files pass TypeScript type checking
  • No errors in src/lib/templates/ directory
  • Proper type safety for Document structure

Files Created

  • /src/lib/templates/content/index.ts (142 bytes)
  • /src/lib/templates/content/shadcn.ts (16,963 bytes)
  • /src/lib/templates/content/lunaris.ts (20,865 bytes)
  • /src/lib/templates/content/halo.ts (1,085 bytes)
  • /src/lib/templates/content/nitro.ts (1,096 bytes)
  • /src/lib/templates/content/README.md (5,962 bytes)

Files Modified

  • /src/lib/templates/template-manager.ts (Updated loadTemplate method)

Usage

import { TemplateManager } from '@/lib/templates/template-manager'

// Load a template
const document = await TemplateManager.loadTemplate('shadcn')

// Get all available templates
const templates = TemplateManager.getTemplates()
// Returns: [{ id: 'blank', name: 'Blank Canvas', ... }, ...]

// Get specific template info
const template = TemplateManager.getTemplate('lunaris')

Future Enhancements

High Priority

  • Complete Halo template implementation
  • Complete Nitro template implementation
  • Add thumbnail images for template preview
  • Add more component examples (modal, dropdown, navigation)

Medium Priority

  • Support for component definitions (reusable instances)
  • Asset management for template images
  • Template variants (light/dark modes)
  • Export templates to other formats

Low Priority

  • Remote template loading from API
  • User-created template registry
  • Template versioning system
  • Template marketplace

Benefits

  1. Zero Config: Users can start with fully-configured design systems
  2. Learning Tool: Templates demonstrate proper token usage and structure
  3. Consistency: Pre-defined tokens ensure design consistency
  4. Extensibility: Easy to add new templates following the established pattern
  5. Type Safety: Full TypeScript support with Document schema validation

Summary

The template system is now fully functional with two complete design system templates (Shadcn UI and Lunaris). Users can:

  • Select templates when creating new documents
  • See pre-configured design tokens and components
  • Modify templates to suit their needs
  • Save custom templates to localStorage

The TODO comment has been removed and the system is production-ready for the implemented templates.
