Interested in forking and extending this work

Hi,
I would like to extend this program so that it has all the features of the old programs pplane and dfield that stopped working in MATLAB a long time ago. I'm an experience MATLAB programmer but not with GUIs. I'm wondering if you could walk me through how your program works.

I was also interested in extending this work (slightly) with an option to add a 2D colormap - magnitude for brightness and color for direction:

Have you worked on an alternative since this request a year ago?

In the end, two things happened.

1. I spent a good deal of time fixing error in dfield/pplane. It's really poorly written and based on old technology, so I was only able to get so far. I documented my experience here: https://roygoodman.net/post/relaunching-pplane/
2. Brian Hong, who works in the education group at MATLAB, released a new modern version. This is extremely full featured compared with your program, and I would recommend that if you want to fork/extend anything, you look at Brian's code.
