Abstract

The Mindful Coffee application integrates established principles from chronobiology, endocrinology, and pharmacokinetics to provide users with a physiologically-grounded model of their daily cortisol rhythm and its bidirectional interaction with caffeine metabolism. By mathematically modeling the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR), diurnal cortisol decline, and caffeine's first-order elimination kinetics, the app enables evidence-based decision-making regarding caffeine consumption timing. This approach aims to optimize cognitive performance, support hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis homeostasis, and promote sleep hygiene in accordance with circadian principles. This document presents the scientific foundations, mathematical models, and peer-reviewed evidence underlying the app's cortisol and caffeine modeling features.
