"how relevant (reading) support for older OME-Zarr versions still is."
Taking a look at https://ngff.openmicroscopy.org/resources/data/index.html may be good start.
That is a very good question.
BioImage Archive is generating OME-Zarr 0.4 data while 1.0 does not come out, and there is a good amount of 0.5 data out there, at least for the challenge.
