@geebinge Do you recall which branch did you see this on? kirkstone branch perhaps?

On scarthgap branch (gen2 only right now, but reenabling gen1 soon), I saw it built the iot sdk for c successfully and I was able to verify it e2e against a local mqtt broker, so I know the c-utility is working at least.

I'll keep a look out for these git submodule when I add gen1 (https://github.com/azure/iot-hub-device-update) support back into scarthgap branch in the next few days.
